Hello, Minneapolitans!

I am very excited; I just received a job offer from a great company in Eagan and start in June. I couldn't be more thrilled to be moving to the MSP area. I love it up there and cannot wait! I do have a question about the commuting time from Eden Prairie (where I am most likely going to live) and Eagan. It would be a straight shot on 494. I have to be to work at 7:00 AM, but wasn't sure how much time to allow for commuting. Thoughts and opinions?

I know traffic on 494 can be notorious at some points during the day, but didn't know what to exactly expect. It says on Google Maps that the distance is around 18 to 19 miles, or 24 minutes. Some have told me it could take an hour each way; do you think that is true?

I am relocating from another city in the Midwest.

I greatly appreciate your help and any comments you may have. Thanks for reading! I can't wait to be in the Twin Cities!

Before 7am it won't be a big deal but if you're coming home between 4 and 6 you'll run into heavy traffic around the MOA/Airport/77 interchange.

Icky. Any reason why you're set on Eden Prairie? I lived on the edge of Eden Prairie, in Minnetonka, and worked in Eden Prairie for a couple years. Then, I started a new job that didn't have a physical location, and my boyfriend started a new position that had him worked in Eagan. So, for about a month and half he had to commute daily from 62/212 interchange to Eagan, and not far into Eagan, just across the river really. We ended up moving to Inver Grove Heights (I don't recommend it as a substitute for Eden Prairie, but it cut his commute down to 5ish minutes)

It's a long drive during rush hour. No traffic, no problem, but if I were you, I'd strongly urge you to pick a different home base. Now, if you are just renting for a few months and then can move, putting up with the commute (especially in the non-snow season) that's fine.

As far as the drive... it probably won't take a whole hour often, but you will need to allow yourself an hour if you don't want to be late (some jobs don't care when you show up (ie. tech) some do, so I make no assumptions). In snow that drive is just miserable, I can tell you. You may be safe, but that won't save you from other reckless drivers. 494 also gets traffic-y at odd times of the day. I drive all over the metro area and beyond now, so I drive on 494 a fair bit at all sorts of hours.

Anyhow, I think you get my point. Dig down deep as to the reasons why you are set on Eden Prairie. (It's a great place for suburban locales, don't get me wrong, but not worth the drive imho)

Also, congrats on the job offer!

Exactly. Commute is not bad in the morning but coming back from work will stink. Also this raises the question of why live in the western metro but work in the eastern metro? Honestly I feel like Eagan is basically Eden Prairie East anyway. Both suburbs are very similar and there's no reason t choose to live so far from work when Eagan is nice.

Wow, thank you for the great, and very prompt, responses! Definitely gives me a good idea of what to expect.

As for the Eden Prairie living scenario, I have a great opportunity to sublease a great home from a mutual friend. Great price, location, clean, etc. It would only be until the end of the summer (August 31). After that point in time I would most certainly consider heading more towards the east. I absolutely love Eagan, it is just that this great opportunity for a great place came up and I might take the individual up on their offer due to the great rent price.

I just wanted to get an idea of what to expect for the summertime commute if I did move into the Eden Prairie place. Sounds like it might work for the summer as a temporary thing, but not a full-time, everyday thing. I am sure that 494 from E.P. to Eagan in the winter can be difficult in inclement conditions.

Thanks for the responses, everyone! It is very much appreciated.

Let me know if you think of anything else. Thanks again!

Congrats.

If it is a sublease, why not grab it for now. As others write, the morning commute will be easy, especially with no concerns about snow. The afternoon drive during the summer will probably be 30 to 60 minutes during rush, depending on *where* in EP and in Eagan you are going. But it will seem longer while you on not moving on 494 (if it is Thompson Rueters (just a guess, but the big employer in Eagan), that is on the east side of Eagan but it is all major roads to get there, no series of stop lights through business blocks). The real issue for EP to Eagan and back is that there are only so many places to cross the Minnesota River, so those roads jam up.

In the Twin Cities, it is all about the commute and the commute is all about avoiding rush hour. My drive to work before and after morning rush is 20 minutes - during morning rush it doubles ... add snow and all bets are off. My afternoon drive is worse. It seems flex scheduling is just not on the radar in the Twin Cities.

But if you have a sublease that ends in August, grab it. Spend the summer checking out the area to figure out the next place to live.

Traffic is always the lightest in the summer when people are on vacation, kids are out of school and weather is pretty good.

My wife actually does Mound to Eagan 2-3 days/week which is way further. Morning at that time is driving at the posted speeds. Evenings can be hit and miss. That said I came across 494 leaving Eagan at about 5pm on Monday this week and hardly slowed down at all.

Check the DOT real time traffic map before you leave work to help set expectations - Mn/DOT Traveler Information
(as I look at it right now it's 5:04pm and westbound 494 looks quite good with just a couple yellow spots)

Oh only for the summer, then I second what Woodbury said: grab it!

And I agree with Bill--summer traffic isn't going to be bad. And for that matter, traffic in the Twin Cities isn't bad compared to other cities, like Seattle or LA etc. If you're not from a city with worse traffic, you'll think the Twin Cities is terrible. But really (generally speaking) the traffic is not that bad except for days with snow/ice situations. We lived 20 minutes from the airport in Minnetonka, and in traffic it would be 30-40 minutes. Very annoying to be sure, but not bad compared to other places in the country. There are lots of people who live very far from their place of employment, in fact, I believe I read somewhere that on average, the people of the Twin Cities spend more every month on commuting than they do on the cost of housing (rent or mortgage)!!! That is crazy (unless your find a lot of enjoyment in driving/driving in traffic), so hence why my initial cautionary post.

Btw, if you like Indian food, check out India Spice House in Eden Prairie. Good food! (And they have South Indian food which is hard to find usually, and they have Chicken 65 on their menu, also not something everyone offers). That is something I've yet to find on this side of the metro... a good Indian restaurant.

Also, while you're living on that side of town, take advantage of MN Landscape Arboretum and Carver (ospreys there), since once you're living over in Eagan, you'll be less inclined to make the drive. :-)

I went from Minnetonka to work in Eagan in 2009 for a few months. Traffic before 7:00 is fine. Afternoon will be worse. Many days in the afternoon it was gridlock westbound from the airport to HWY 100. Alternate routes through Bloomington didn't seem to save much time. Although, the opposite commute is probably worse for everyone going to the job centers in the SW metro.
